28 persons still missing, 1555 persons hurt in Manipur violence, says CM Biren Singh

Imphal: Chief minister Nongthombam Biren Singh informed the assembly on Tuesday that altogether 63 persons were reported missing since the ethnic violence unfolded in restive Manipur in May last year.
Out of them, 26 were found dead, 9 were traced out alive and 28 are still missing, informed Biren, while responding to posers raised by legislators on the fifth and last day of the 5th session of 12th state assembly.
On the missing of two standard XII students from Imphal West district’s Sagolband Tera area , the leader of the house said the Cental bureau of investigation has reported to have filed charge sheet against five accused arrested in the case.
In the ongoing strife, 1555 persons were injured and of them 1429 are civilians, 28 are Central security forces and 98 are state police personnel, he added.
He informed the House that fifty percent advance has been compensated for 139 families under permanent housing scheme for the violence affected people, and another fifty percent of another 472 families are also sanctioned.
After completion of properties assessment of the affected families by the Deputy Commissioners, compensation would be distributed according to the available resources.
As interim relief, families whose houses were destroyed or gutted Rs one lakh compensation per family has been approved of which 25 percent have been sanctioned.
As per the PIB website the ministry of home affairs (MHA) has decided to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar to ensure the internal security of the country and to maintain the demographic structure of India’s North Eastern States Bordering Myanmar, he said.
The external affairs ministry is currently in the process of scraping it, said Biren who also the holds the home portfolio.
Clarifying on a calling attention motion, Biren said the killing of sub divisional police officer Chingtham Anand of Moreh sub-division in Tengnoupoal distinct was an act of cowardice.
Nine persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, he said, adding that the case is being investigated by National Investigation Agency (NIA) .
