Shillong: People of the famous and picturesque Shirui village in Tangkhul-Naga dominated Ukhrul district have put a ban on killing and hunting of animal and birds there for three years.

Their joint Sustainable Livelihood Program is designed to amalgamate expertise, technology, and indigenous knowledge to fortify communities against isolation and climate challenges like floods and droughts. The primary objective is the deployment of solar-powered solutions, coupled with fostering local leadership and entrepreneurship, especially in agricultural and non-agricultural sectors.

To achieve this, the initiative aims to unite various development programs in the region by partnering with governmental schemes, financial institutions, civil society groups, local innovators, entrepreneurs, and community-based organizations, including Self Help Groups (SHGs) and producer groups.

Dhruvi Shah, CEO of Axis Bank Foundation, emphasized the project’s significance, stating, “Our collaboration with SELCO Foundation aims to harness human potential in the Northeast’s remote areas. By establishing solar-based systems, nurturing local leadership, and creating new livelihood opportunities, our goal is to diversify income sources and significantly enhance the socio-economic landscape for local communities, steering them toward self-reliance.”

This joint effort seeks to empower rural communities, encourage sustainable resource management, and enhance livelihoods sustainably. Axis Bank Foundation and SELCO Foundation are committed to driving positive change and sustainable growth in Northeast India.

The program’s launch occurred during a two-day convention, bringing together stakeholders to deliberate on sustainable livelihood models focusing on renewable energy use and delivering programs to remote communities.
