Imphal: In a major political twist amid the present public unrest besieging the state, the Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) on Sunday withdrew support to the 17-month old BJP-led N Biren Singh government, citing the regime is “no longer fructuous.”

Of the 60-member Manipur assembly, KPA has two legislators - Kimneo Haokip Hangshing who won from Kangpokpi seat in Kangpokpi district and Chinlunthang who got elected from Singhat seat in Churachandpur district in the last state assembly polls held in March 2022. In the polls, the saffron party won 32 seats.

Both the two legislators were among the ten Kuki-Zo MLAs who demanded a separate administration in the state for their community a few days after the violence broke out in Manipur on May 3.

A letter sent to Governor Anusuiya Uikey by the newly formed alliance on Sunday said “after careful consideration of the current conflagration, the continued support for the incumbent government of Manipur led by Chief Minsiter N Biren Singh is no longer fructuous.”

“Accordingly, the support of KPA to the Government of Manipur is hereby withdrawn and can be considered null and void,” said the letter signed by the alliance’s president Tongmang Haokip.

Despite the alliance’s exit , the Biren Singh government still commands absolute majority with 47 MLAs with the support from 7 NPP MLAs , 5 NPF legislators and 3 Independents .
