Imphal: Manipur police on Saturday registered an FIR case against the Assam Rifles (AR) for obstructing the cops’ duties during a manhunt operation in Bishnupur district, official sources said on Tuesday.

This came amid the valley people’s growing protest against the paramilitary forces, charging them of siding with a particular community while performing their duties in the ongoing ethnic conflict.

Eventually, the police operation was conducted soon after three persons, including a father-son suo, were killed during their sleep inside their house by Kuki miscreants at the Kwakta area in the district bordering Kuki-Zo dominated Churachandpur district on Saturday morning.

The FIR was registered by sub inspector N Devdas Singh, in-charge , officer-in-charge of Phougakchao Ikhai police station in Bishnupur against personnel of 9 AR under section 166/186/189/341/353/506 and 34 IPC.

Assistant sub inspector Md Ziaulhaque of the same station has been assigned to investigate the case, the sources added.

The police charged the rifles of disobeying law by public servant with intent to cause injury to any person, obstructing public servant in discharge of public function, threat to injury to public servant etc.

An official report on the matter prepared by Devas said that on the same day (Saturday) about 6.40 am they received information that teams of police, including team of commandos led by the district’s SP, proceeded towards the Pholjang road along Kwakta Ward No 8.

That was conducted as a follow up action in connection with an earlier FIR for conducting search operation to trace out accused Kuki militants that might take shelter at Kwakta ward No 8 i.e. the adjoining area between Kwakta and Pholjag village, it added.

On reaching the Kutub Wali Masjid located at the same area along the Pholjang road , the police team including the commandos “was stopped and blocked their way by the personnel of 9th AR, giving a chance to the accused Kuki militants to escape freely to somewhere a safe zone for them,” it said.

Notably, an order issued by the additional DGP of police ( law and order) L Kailun on Monday said that the Naka (check point) at Moirang Lamkhai on the Bishnipur –Kangvai road should be manned by civil police and 128 BN CRPF in the place of 9AR with immediate effect.
