MSFDS to Organise Free Screening of ‘Ishanou’
ART & CULTURE

Imphal: The Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) will organise a free public screening of the internationally acclaimed Manipuri feature film Ishanou (The Chosen One) on October 16 at 3:30 pm at the Palace Auditorium, Imphal as part of the Government of India’s Seva Sankalp 2026 initiative.

Directed by Aribam Syam Sharma and written by Maharaj Kumari Binodini Devi, the film released in 1991, Ishanou is considered a landmark in Manipuri cinema for its portrayal of the singular Maibi tradition and cultural life of Manipur. The film, which made history by becoming the first film from the Northeast Indian states to be officially selected for the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes International Film Festival in 1992, saw a renewed global appreciation in 2023 after its digitally restored version debuted in Cannes Classics section of the prestigious festival.

The digitisation and restoration of the film was done through an initiative taken by MSFDS along with the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), Mumbai and director Aribam Syam Sharma. The effort marked an important step forward for Manipur’s cinematic history and film preservation and an opportunity to share a cultural legacy with the wider world.

According to MSFDS, the public screening will enable wider accessibility of the film and help revive appreciation of Manipur’s cinematic and cultural legacy.
The autonomous body of Directorate of Art & Culture, Government of Manipur has called upon the members of the public to be part of the screening experience. Entry will be free.
