Rock Concert on Patriots’ Day Sparks Controversy in Imphal: FIR Filed Against Organizers
GENERAL
Imphal: The All Manipur Football Association (AMFA) is facing severe backlash after organizing a rock concert at a government sports complex in Imphal on Patriots’ Day, a significant occasion honoring the Manipuri heroes who sacrificed their lives during the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War.
The concert, held at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, has drawn widespread criticism for its timing and location, with many accusing the organizers of disrespecting the historical importance of the day. Patriots’ Day is a solemn occasion dedicated to remembering the fallen heroes, particularly Prince Bir Tikendrajit Singh and General Thangal, who were executed by the British on August 13, 1891, for their roles in resisting colonial rule.
Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS) Minister Govindas Konthoujam expressed outrage over the unauthorized event, pledging legal action against those responsible. T. Phulen Meitei, the Director of YAS, has since lodged a formal complaint with the Officer-in-Charge of Imphal Police Station, accusing AMFA of violating the law by proceeding with the concert without the necessary permissions from relevant authorities, including the deputy commissioner and himself.
The complaint alleges that the event disrupted peace and tranquility on a day meant for solemn remembrance. The AMFA is also accused of contributing to noise pollution, having failed to obtain approval from the Manipur Pollution Control Board. Additionally, reports suggest that many attendees, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, caused disturbances, further disrespecting the sanctity of the day.
Civil society groups have joined the chorus of condemnation, calling AMFA’s actions an affront to the memory of the state’s martyrs. The complaint urges immediate legal action against AMFA’s executive members and others involved in organizing the event.
Adding to the controversy, sources claim that a rebel groups has taken the organizers, members of the performing bands, and other individuals into custody in connection with the concert, raising concerns over escalating tensions. One of the armed groups has been asked one of the rock singer to shave off his hair bald as punishment.
The incident has sparked a broader debate on the importance of understanding and respecting historical significance and patriotism, especially on days of national importance.
